THE MOST POPULAR QUESTION is "How do I become a judge for SND's annual competition?" Perhaps the second most asked question is "How are judges selected?"
The answers are no secret and have been publicized many times, but it is always worth a review.
Judges are selected by the Competition Committee from a master list
created when the judging moved to the S.I. Newhouse School of Public
Communications at Syracuse University some years ago. The list is
continually updated by the SND office staff with the help of SND
members and others.
One does not have to
be a SND member to be a judge. Judges are those individuals prominent
and/or knowledgeable enough to sit in judgment of the competition.
Judges are recruited by, and responsible to, the edition coordinator
and are chosen through the general agreement of the Competition
Committee.
People may nominate themselves if they
wish.
Nominations should be sent to Competition Committee
Director Marshall Matlock. The nomination should include a few
sentences why the person is qualified to be a judge. Please, no resumes.

Selecting judges for the Competition is a year-round responsibility for
the Competition Committee with the final decisions made each fall at
the annual SND workshop. The coordinator begins contacting possible
judges immediately following the workshop. Every effort is made to get
judges from all parts of the world, from various publication types and
sizes and every gender. Judges do not have to be working for a
newspaper nor be a member of SND to be chosen. Twenty-five judges are
selected each year to serve on the five five-member judging teams. Also
two judges are selected to serve as a "generalist" for categories two
through 19. (A "generalist"is used when a judge has a conflict that
causes him or her not to be able to vote on an entry.)
Judging
rules define a conflict when a judge comes across an entry from his or
her publication, a publication he or she has done recent consulting
work for ("recent" is an 18-month period immediately prior to judging)
or a publication with which he or she directly competes.
Now that you have the answer let the nominations begin.
Send an e-mail to the SND office with your nomination information.
