SU'S Newhouse School Joins SND To Improve News Design
ABOVE is first building of a SU's three-building communications complex.
THE S.I. NEWHOUSE SCHOOLof Public Communications at Syracuse University is known worldwide for many excellent programs. It's not surprising the School joined the Society for News Design to cosponsor the leading newspaper design creative competition in the world.
Each February 10,000 to 14,000 entries showcasing work from design departments at publications around the world are reviewed and some win the coveted awards offered by the Society.
This is a year-round commitment by the Newhouse School to better publication design and to showcase and honor the best of the best.
The 30th Edition competition was the School's 20th year of co-sponsoring this two-week event where, among other awards, the World's Best-Designed Newspapers™ are selected.
This Web site has many purposes. One is to tell the viewer and reader about the SU/SND Affiliate. The second is to give you valuable information about the yearly competition and try to give you a behind-the-scenes glimpse of what really takes place at the judging. Finally this site is to showcase the awards that are won each year by international designers, from Newhouse students and even from the SU/SND Competition Director C. Marshall Matlock, who has been on the SU staff for more than 35 years.
We realize it's totally impossible to explain the competition. You have to be there to begin to understand how so many individual entries -- some as many as hundreds of pages -- get evaluated in just seven days during the two-week period in Syracuse, NY in February.
We invite you to visit the many pages on this site by clicking on the links at the top of each page. This site will be updated as frequently as necessary to keep the information current; however, if you have a question please feel free to contact Prof. Matlock. He is always willing to receive suggestions and comments so pleasedon't hesitate to contact him.
Enjoy the many facets of this site and visit often for updates.
